Annual Concert 7th December 2024 - Blaenavon Workmen's Hall
Despite Storm Darragh, the Choir's annual concert opened to an almost full house. The feedback received has been excellent (see bottom of this page) and we want to thank our Patrons, Sponsors and all who have invested time and energy into making the night one to remember.
The first half started with the curtains opening to Myfanwy. Parrys Welsh classic song was followed by some of our favorite welsh Hymes Rachie, Tydi a Roddaist and Cwm Rhondda. Notable performance by the choirs pianist Alisa- Jane Frazer accompanying the choir for the first time at the annual concert
Welsh tenor Jake Harris sang three songs that captivated the audience La Barchéta by Hahn; Die Nacht (Strauss) a piece that allowed for a softer, more nuanced performance, emphasizing his vocal control and beauty in the quieter dynamics.
Jake finished his first musical set with Tosti's romantic aria Aprile
Next the choir showcased ints contemporary repertoire starting with Unchained Melody.
Sondheim's Send in the Clowns also had a local flavour with our own arrangement by Oz Arnold from our Bass section.
I Want to Hold Your Hand ending this part of the performance.
During the intermission a 50 year Long service award was presented to Malcolm Paynter and the Chorister of the year award was presented to John Dimmer
Our Musical Director Andrew Protherough Jones opening the second half with Wagner's Roman War Song and Pilgrims Chorus, the choir set a grand and dramatic tone, effectively showcasing their robust harmonies and theatricality.
Jake Harris' final songs built on the high performance quality he set in the first half. Supported by accompanist Nicola Rose the poignant performance of I Heard You Singing by Coates, captivated the audience with its lyrical beauty. The talented tenor then transitioned into the moving Pleading, by Elgar, further demonstrating his expressive capabilities.
Musica Proibita by Gastaldon added an element of romance at the end of his memorable performance.
The choirs performance concluded with the traditional Welsh pieces Pan Fo’r Nos Yn Hir by Ryan Davies and Hughes Gwahoddiad which resonated deeply with the audience, celebrating cultural heritage and community through rich choral traditions.
O Gymru and the Welsh national anthem allowed the choir and Jake to perform together to a standing ovation.
Overall, the performance was a remarkable blend of emotion and artistry, leaving a lasting impression on all who attended.
